WELCOME TO LA MAISON DU FROMAGE ABONDANCE

Set off on a sensorial journey in 9 stages, discovering the land, gestures, and techniques.

Here, time is measured by the rhythm of the fascinating cheesemaking process. From the cool Alpine pastures to the warm aromatic scents of milking, to the mild scent of rennet to the gentle aromas of maturing cheese. Let all your senses awaken, observe, listen, smell, and breathe in the odours.

Be observant, the more you pay full attention, the more you will get out of the experience, and here you will enjoy the best taste in the world.

    Self-guided Tour

    Observe, listen, touch, smell, and taste. All your senses will be awakened as you immerse yourself in the history of Abondance cheese and its territory. The milk, Alpine chalet, manufacturing stages, cheese maturing, the labels and other diverse Savoie cheeses, are all the themes to discover on the ground floor. On the first floor, be guided through the products available to buy, cook, and of course taste this delicious cheese!

    Information is available in English, German and Dutch.

    Our site is especially designed for children! At each section during the visit there are many different manipulative games to play with the family. There is also the Abondance Valley hopscotch, the area especially for tiny tots “Petits & Cie”, and reduced prices.

    A Guided Tour Discovering Abondance Cheese

    Cycle 2 and 3

    With a mediator the children will go on a journey to discover the Abondance Valley through different themes: the valley’s geography, the breed of cow and how Abondance cheese is made, the milk and other quality Savoie cheeses. Also, how to savour and cook this succulent cheese that the children will be able to taste at the end of the visit. Each child will receive an informative booklet.

    Farm Discovery Game

    A workshop on how to make cheese

    From milking to the table, what are the secrets of transforming milk into cheese? In this workshop the children will become apprentice cheesemakers and will go home with their own cheese to eat! Make a little Tomme, discover the breeds of cows, the benefits of milk, Savoie cheeses and of course the manufacturing stages of our cheeses!

Several themes are covered to help the pupils understand life in a mountain environment, including the geography, traditional habitat, construction materials, vernacular and intangible heritage. The visit rounds off with a cheese tasting.

    This is an outdoor visit, wear appropriate clothing for the mountain climate whatever the season.

TRANS’ABONDANCE SKI: TRANSPORT UPON REQUEST FOR GROUPS

From the Christmas holidays to the end of March, there is a free shuttle bus upon request for groups who are staying in holiday centres in Abondance. Daily except Saturday, it stops at the ice rink in Auffaz, the Essert cable car, La Maison du Fromage Abondance and the Abondance Abbey. Route: ABONDANCE / RICHEBOURG / CHARMY L’ENVERS.
