What is a geopark?
First and foremost it is a vibrant home, brought to life by its inhabitants, visitors and local players, where the relationship between humans and nature is an essential component. A geopark includes a number of remarkable sites (23 sites in Chablais) with regards to their scientific interest, rarity, aesthetic appeal or their educational value. Their interest can also be archaeological, historical or natural. The public can learn the geological history of these 23 selected geosites through the information panels and interactive equipment.
Numerous local guides and mountain guides are fully knowledgeable about the sites as they have taken a specialised course.
Geosites in the Abondance Valley:
Lake Plagnes in Abondance
From the glaciers that sculpted the landscapes, across the bulging peatlands, the pathways will carry you through a history that dates back 20,000 years. In Cubourré you will discover the strange origin of a giant rock!
The Bassachaux pass has a stunning 360° panoramic view. You can see all the way from the Abondance Valley, the smugglers’ land, to the Aulps Valley. Here you will see how the two valleys were modelled during the Ice Age, but also the birth of Montriond Lake, just a few centuries ago.
Les Cornettes de Bise
The Bise mountain pastures are a timeless place and the territory is shared between two municipalities. You will discover farming, the story about the lake that disappeared, and about the water that is filtered here and resurfaces 4km further away. Development planned in the near future.
